Be on the lookout for DVDs coming back

To be in the know, one must monitor the titles being discontinued, but also what is being re-released. And they could happen at any time for any reason. Titles that go out of print stand to be discontinued either because of rights, poor sales, anniversaries, contract issues, or anything in between. When titles get re-released, sometimes they are the exact same DVD. Othertimes they are revamped with extra material. Othertimes they are bare bones only versions. Sometimes they are anniversary or boxed sets, while other times they go to a new studio all together. Packaging changes occur, formats change, perhaps remastered, cleaned up, or use a different print entirely, depending on the film. No matter the reason, the fact remains that we have to recognize that sometimes it can be beneficial, while other times it is a thorn.

This list will consist of titles previously out of print, but will not include versions on DVD and announced on Blu-ray for the first time.

No image is posted, but MGM is re-releasing Flesh + Blood.

From Echo Bridge, previously released by the now defunt Miramax. The Woody Allen film starring Leonardo DiCaprio (released shortly after Titanic) gets the budge film treatment.

The long out of print series from Rhino, Jem and the Holograms, is finally re-released in three ways. A Complete Series, Season One and Season Two. Not sure why a Season Three set is not released. I do not know if Rhino was every able to complete the series as Season 3 only consists of a Part 1. Also being released by Shout! Factory is Underdog, previously released through Sony Wonder. Also, Shout! Factory again pleases those with getting those tough to find stuff with the Grateful Dead collection of 14 movies! Begining with Grateful Dead the Movie, Closing of Winterland, and Dead Ahead, all previous Monterey titles that have become prized in recent years. For more details that Amazon does not provide about the contents, go here. Perhaps most curious is Shout! releasing the Walking Tall Trilogy.

A cult film previously released by BFI comes this shocker to Scorpio Releasing. The previous version was probably a barebones version with a poor replication, while this new version is a "remastered scope screen", otherwise titled "Katarin's Nightmare theater".

This title seems to come and go in different and varied ways. With repackaging, Paramount re-releases the Naked Gun Trilogy. Paramount also sublet a lot of titles to Olive Films, including 1900, with a much nicer cover with original poster art. Amazon posts time differences of 4 minutes, so I am not sure if some of the racier scenes are cut out.

The Criterion Collection seems to also be reaping the benefits of studios subsidizing their archives. Here, Sony gives way to Vanya, while Paramount offers Harold and Maude. Both on DVD and Blu-ray.

Universal Studios is celebrating it's 100th Anniversary and releasing, what seems like 100 movies through the years on DVD and Blu-ray, in both single and combo packs. Some are just repackaged, while others are coming back in print. Car Wash has been out of print as a single disc, but in a Richard Pryor Collection.

Of course, Disney always seems to be rotating their catalog. Their straight to video efforts are no exception.

The CARRY ON titles had an official release with Anchor Bay and has since been discontinued. Subsequent movies of the series were dubiously released with Jef Films or Telefims or some other gray market label, but has not had an official release in that time. So while these are not re-releases, they are available officially.

Synapse from time to time gets quality films to release. Here they gain an old Anchor Bay favorite that has long been discontinued. They release in a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack.

Redemption Films originally released through Image Entertainment. Once those went out of print, they released a variety of classics as well as home grown, straight to video efforts that seem to match their catalog. Once again, they discontinue their own titles to be re-released on blu-ray in new packaging. In addition to the ones posted here, there are some without pictures that are set for blu-ray. Girl on a Motorcycle. Marquis De Sade's Justine. The Asphyx.

Warner Brothers, as you might have expected, releases, yet another big box Ultimate Collection for Casablanca's 70th Anniversary.

Image Entertainment, once the king of DVD releases has been relegated to either re-releases or budget DVDs. Acorn Media has picked up the slack on this classic TV mini-series.
