Impulse Pictures releases (through Synapse Films) their collection of remastered trailers from the NIKKATSU ROMAN PORNO COLLECTION. This set of films belong distinctly to the Pinku genre or "pink films". Roman Porno belongs to a Second Wave of Pink films from 1971 through 1982 (according to Wikipedia). The distinction between a "pink" film and a "roman" film essentially is the budget, Roman being of a higher quality. Nikkatsu refers to the studio who released about 850 of these films in-house. These trailers range in date from 1971 through 1988 of various types. Many are forced or bondage or just your basic love type story. The trailers here seem to be very short, not more than a minute in length. All with new subtitles and remastered image quality that looks remarkably well considering its age and scarcity. There are roughly 25 trailers in this collection.

These trailers, despite the title, are not what would consider "porn" in the US sense, but are certainly films that abound in nudity. However, their full feature films might reveal more than the trailer can show or even suggest. There was one trailer that had a shot of fellatio, but that was digitally fogged. Generally this sort of genre is not my taste, but in recent years it has become quite popular. I dont find them kinky, exciting or a turn-on by any means. But if Japanese porn is your taste, then this collection will serve both your senses and has cultural, historical merits.  

NIKKATSU ROMAN PORNO COLLECTION comes with a 4-page liner notes on the history of Roman Porno from author and curator Jason Sharp. Rounding out the disc are a selection menu for individual trailers, and a Bonus Short Film titled "Ryoko's Lesbian Flight'.
