Cinema Sewer - The Underbelly of the Underworld
For those that are privileged will have had some wind fly their way and hear about this magazine, but may have some trouble getting it. Well, now that is no longer an issue, nope, its a collection. Ok, enough of these bad puns. Its available both at Amazon and its publisher, FabPress at dirt cheap prices! Ok, thats the last one.
If you like comics and porn, and never seem to found an area in your closet that can handle both of them, well look no further. Here is a collection of reviews, histories, diatribes, rants and recollections from Robin Bougie, cinefile of classic 60's and 70's porn. Well, its not all porn. But a large part of it is. But the creative side of this book is that its completely written in comic style - that is to say, everything is drawn by hand, all the way down to the lettering.
Some of this style might not always be enjoyable to read, but, I was very entertained by Boughie's style of writing. He has a point of view and tells it well, and with a style all of his own.
Now there were some articles that did not interest me as much as others, so some of it I glanced through. But one of my favorites is his write up on Blockbuster and reading the testimonies about how they edit their films. Here are some examples:
"If Blockbuster's editing of films is something to be so proud of, why don't they advertise it? Why have a section on their website, or a brochue, explaining to the public why they cut the footage from the films they do? Because they know it's wrong, that's why, and they know people will stop renting from them."
There are many other examples that I will leave to you. Some of my other favorite entries in the book were the article revolving around the reality of Snuff films, which he logically points out never existed despite persistent rumors.
The other funny article was how TV changes movie lines to broadcast films without any cursing in the dialogue. A thread was created at dvdmaniacs.com asking what people remember from TV changing lines to select movies. A funny one written here is from Blue Velvet where the original line is: "I'll fuck anything that moves", and was changed to "I'll kiss anything that moves." Wow, talk about totally changing the tone and meaning of the whole scene (and movie!) in one word. I personally remember Breakfast Club being shown on TV, and because there are so many swear words that had to be changed, it became a completely different movie. It was almost funnier because none of the lines made sense. One of the lines, I remember, originally said, "Just bury your head in the sand, and wait for your fuckin' prom!" The TV version went: "Just bury your head in the sand, and wait for your fancy prom!" Fancy? Is that even close? Is that really what Judd Nelson was trying to say in that moment? I think not. Sometimes I wonder why TV even bothers to go through the trouble. But regardless, its pretty funny.
One of the cool things about Bougie and this book is that he researchs via internet and forums, etc. keeping totally on the pulse of our dirty little minds. Seriously, when you read the book, you will know that he is not only whackin off to the movies he watches, but has a great appreciation for the films. While most of the material, as I said, is porn, its classic unshaven porn from the 60's through the 80's. Aside from this, you will probably see some films you recognize with reviews of the world of trashy horror to lists of movies with bad titles to a comparative approach to all the "real death" cinema starting with Faces of Death. Actually, that was a cool article because I think I have seen about half of them (but did not go over Shocking Asia, volumes 1-3).
The biographies of some well known porn stars of Serena and Linda Lovelace are well researched and accurate (to my knowledge) and read as good as any wikipedia entry (if not better), except with illustrations! Most of the material deals with American films, so there is little about Euro-trash of Franco, Argento, D'Amato, Fulci, etc., just for your Euro-trash lovers out there who might have thought otherwise.
This is my first forray into the Cinema Sewer and I can say that I am a new fan. There is an official website you can check out at cinemasewer.com where you can also purchase the book as well as the newest issue and some back issues. In addition, they released a DVD called Retard O'Tron, which is a compilation of trailers, commercials and just plain old weird shit, not sure where it all comes from, but when I get a copy, you will know about it.
It is people like Bougie that are keeping these relatively obscure films alive. Not always by remastering the films, but by bringing them to public attention. I see the response when Synapse, Severin, Subversive or Alternative Cinema offers these titles in as pristine condition as possible, preserving their position in history. Something Weird Video is another company that has a huge library of titles that have pretty much fallen out of sight, but has made a comeback through VHS and DVD. Alpha Blue Archives is another company dedicated to bringing classic smut from the 60's through the 80's and has some of the best DVDs of hard to find adult films around.
So check out the book, its great fun and an enlightening cinematic read. Post comments and thoughts in our forum here.
