DVD Updates and Hot Items for Feb

This last month has been interesting as we see some important titles become discontinued. But before we get into that, there has been some interesting news pertaining to the OOP Market. Most of these points are made about Warner Brothers DVDs. Blade Runner - The Director's Cut (Remastered Limited Edition) was recently discontinued, but announced that by the end of the year, a more fuller version, "with all its trimmings" will be released by Christmas. The film Fanny, starring Leslie Caron released in 1961, which was never released on DVD, but previously on VHS, Warners rights to the film has expired. With A Clockwork Orange and 2001 - A Space Odyssey officially discontinued titles, Warner is planning a Stanley Kubrick promotion by the end of the year. Also expect some more HD of Kubrick films. Twilight Zone: The Movie is expecting a release this Halloween. This movie has yet to see the light of DVD. The movie Electric Dreams, previously released on VHS will not see DVD by Warner, as they have lost the rights to this film. Possibility (emphasis added), that Little Shop of Horrors will come complete with the alternate ending. No set plans. Nothing is certain about this, other than that Warner would like to release this title with the alternate ending, but again, its just in the thought process at the moment. So, don't lose your hat just yet. Plans to remaster Phantom Tollbooth is planned, but do not expect it for a few years. This was a film by the late Chuck Jones of Warner Brothers animation fame (like the creator of Bigs Bunny fame), so it would be of interest to all of us animation geeks out there. Those are most pertinent here at this site at this time. For additional information about upcoming Warner titles in the works, check out this great interview at Home Theater Forum. [Edit - see forum for more info - http://www.rareoopdvds.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1767 ] Other popular titles this month, which were previously mentioned, are Mahabharata (1989) (2pc), The Saragossa Manuscript and What's Up, Tiger Lily? All are becoming dried up at various venues. The pre-release of Severin Films limited edition boxed set Black Emanuelle's Box 1 (4pc) (Bonc Ws Ltd Sub), shows alot of promise. As stated there is only 4,000 of these in production which is slated for release at the end of this month. Whether there is a delay in getting a subtitle company to work on the film has yet to be revealed. It has been noted Mrs. Doubtfire received a Special Edition treatment with its re-release. alt=''Mulholland Drive will be coming back in Region 2 with a special 2-disc special edition. It will include, strangely, yet importantly, a chapter index! The American release had no chapter titles as Lynch wanted people to watch the film in its entirety. Also, a second disc will include interviews with Lynch, Watts, Theroux and Harring. Also exclusive interviews with the composer, Angelo Badalamenti and Mary Sweeney. In addition are behind the scenes, trailers, press conference at Cannes and a trailer for Inland Empire. Additionally, it is reported that Rhino will be distributing Lynch's latest film to DVD. Check out the article here. Artwork for the new Anchor Bay The Mario Bava Collection, Volume 1 (Black Sunday / Black Sabbath / The Girl Who Knew Too Much / Kill Baby Kill / Knives of the Avenger) has been revealed. News concerning the Amazon Film Noir Boxed Set has been revealed and it does not come complete with spine #16, the Elia Kazan classic Boomerang. This film, as we know, was discontinued soon after its release. Amazon has initally stated all 18 titles to be included in this set, but as the month of February progressed, the page was continually revised, eventually deleting Boomerang from its line-up. Reports from those that received the set did not get Boomerang, not a box that it was reportedly to come in, but rather a bundled package. With all that aside, the recent death of Anna Nicole Smith has prompted interest in her titles as well as some OOP Playboy titles: Anna Nicole Smith - Exposed Playboy - 1994 Video Playmate Calendar Playboy: 1994 Video Playmate Calendar Playboy - Best of 3 Pack, Pamela Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith, & Jenny McCarthy Playboy: The Best of... Pamela Anderson/Jenny McCarthy/Anna Nicole Smith Playboy - The Best of Anna Nicole Smith Playboy - Playmates of the Year, The 90's Playboy: Playmates of the Year - The 90's Taste of Playboy Vol. 1 Skyscraper/To the Limit To the Limit Lastly, and perhaps, most interestingly is a suprise that Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 9 is now discontinued. I do not know which title/titles fell out of rights, but it was ususpected and so now it is virtually dried up on the online market. So, together with Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection: Vol. 10, which has been heating up recently (perhaps due to 9's discontinuation), these two duo's are a pretty hot item right now. The Rhino website no longer offers this title. On the other hand, despite what MSTinfo.com stated, I do have confirmation from Dr. Rhino that The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 1 is not planned to be discontinued, despite many, if not all online retailers are backordered or do not have them in stock. Rhino's website does carry them, but they seem to be in limited quantities anyway. I suspect The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 3 might be in a similar case of limbo. I am not sure how certain it is in regards to the latter two volumes, but I am gonna sit back and see what becomes of it. So, that is all for now. Join the forum to be on the pulse of the market! Oh, and the unfortunate release of E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (Widescreen Collector's Edition) is now out of print as well as the equally unfortunate "limited edition" E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (Ultimate Gift Boxed Set).
