2-Disc Special Sets
There have been a spawning interest in recent Collector's and Limited Editions that major studios have been releasing. Most recently is Munich Collector's Edition, which was released on May 9th of this year and is already displaying as out of print. It is a 2-disc Limited Edition set which features interviews with Spielberg, a documentary on how they recreated the 70's, an exploration of the real events surrounding what occured in the film, and many others. Unfortunately there does not seem to be a number to determine how limited it is.
Another recent release is the King Kong 2-disc Special Edition. This does not appear to be limited, however, the adjunctive boxed set, "The Production Diaries" is limited to 350,000 sets. That is a really big number to have limited, which will impact its collectible value when it eventually does go out of print. Remember the Spider-man Limited Edition Boxed set? It is still available and you cant give it away at retail price.
Final Fantasy VII, which was just released, came in a special 2-disc special edition set. This set generally is receiving good reviews from buyers, but there is no indication this is limited. Based on the popular video game, this set comes with a featurette on the the making of the film, deleted scenes, and other extra features.
In its fourth installment, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has matured its characters into young adults and so the story continues. Every film in this series has received the 2-disc treatment (check out the boxed set) and up to date, none have shown collectible promise as they serve as glorified web pages, promotional material and childrens games. Other than that, there are minimal features that are worth investing.
You also have the unlikely 2-disc set from Memoirs of a Geisha. This set is a Special Edition which features many curious featurettes that focus on the production value of the film from location to costume design to screen adaptation of the novel.
Further, there is Walk the Line 2-Disc Collector's Set. Amazon lists two versions, one as widescreen edition, the other just as a Collector's Set. There does not appear any significant difference between the two listings, it is more than likely a catalog number change, or something unconsequential.
Some recent Collector's Sets that have shown some interest that we have covered in the past are:
Jarhead
Cinderella Man
Fantastic Four
Batman Begins
